Nelson Mandela

1.- Nelson Mandela is one of the most respected people in the world. For countless reasons he is a huge hero. He is a person all us can learn many lessons from. He has seen almost everything in his nine decades, from being tortured to becoming president of the country he loves. He retired in 1999 but continues to travel the world helping people.
Nelson was born in 1918 into a South Africa that was divided along black and white racial lines. He says he had a wonderful childhood. He first learnt of the terrible apartheid system when he studied to become a lawyer. This led to his involvement in the African National Congress (ANC), which he later became the leader of.
The South African government did its best to keep Mandela from spreading his message of equality for blacks and racial unity. It put him in prison for 27 years. He became famous around the world as an icon of the struggle for freedom in South Africa. Rock stars, actors, politicians and ordinary people campaigned to free him and end apartheid.
Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and the world rejoiced. His never-ending hope, energy and enthusiasm won him the hearts of millions. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. A year later, he was elected to be his country’s first ever black president. Today, he is still hard at work offering advice about global problems.

Lady Gaga

2.- Of course, Lady Gaga isn’t her real name. She was born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta on March the 28th, 1986. Lady Gaga is her stage name. She is an American singer-songwriter who has become one of the biggest names in music – for her songs, performances, fashion and politics. She became famous in 2008 and just two years later was included in Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Lady Gaga had a musical upbringing. She learned to play piano from the age of four and was singing in public by the time she was 14. She also loved acting in musicals at school. She went to a New York art college at the age of 17 where she wrote a research paper that focused on "music, art, sex and celebrity”. She concentrated on songwriting and singing in New York clubs. She got her name from the Queen song “Radio Gaga”.
Gaga was inspired by David Bowie, Blondie and Madonna. She hit the big time following the release of her debut album The Fame in 2008. The singles "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" became international hits. The album reached number one on the record charts in six countries. Her second album Born This Way (2011) also enjoyed spectacular success. The single "Born This Way" was the fastest-selling single in iTunes history.
Gaga is also outspoken when it comes to politics. She has spoken at military meetings in support of gays and lesbians in the US Army and shocked the world by wearing a dress made from meat, to draw attention to human rights. She is also a philanthropist and raised $500,000 for the Haiti earthquake from a concert performance. Gaga also designed a Japan Prayer Bracelet which raised $1.5 million for Japan’s tsunami relief fund.

Bill Gates (Traducción)

William Henry Gates III was born on October 28, 1955. He is one of the world's richest people and perhaps the most successful businessman ever. He co-founded the software giant Microsoft and turned it into the world’s largest software company. He is the best-known entrepreneur of the PC revolution. Gates was fascinated with electronics from a young age. In 1975 he read about a small technology company. He contacted them to see if they were interested in a computer programme he had written. Gates was in charge at Microsoft from 1975 until 2006. He was an active software developer at the beginning. He had a vision that computers could change everyone’s life. He helped make this vision come true and developed many products that are now part of modern life. His management style has been studied and copied around the world.
Gates stepped down as Microsoft CEO in June 2008. He now spends his time with his wife, Melinda, focusing on their charitable foundation. 1.- World Cup
The FIFA World Cup, occasionally called the Football World Cup, but usually referred to simply as the World Cup, is an international football competition contested by the men's national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not contested because of World War II.

The current format of the tournament involves 32 teams competing for the title at venues within the host nation(s) over a period of about a month – this phase is often called the World Cup Finals. A qualification phase, which currently takes place over the preceding three years, is used to determine which teams qualify for the tournament together with the host nation(s). The World Cup is the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world, with an estimated 715.1 million people watching the 2006 final.

During the 18 tournaments that have been held seven nations have won the title. Brazil are the only team to have played in every tournament and have won the World Cup a record five times. Italy are the current champions and have won four titles, and Germany are next with three. The other former champions are Uruguay, winners of the inaugural tournament, and Argentina, with two titles each, and England and France, with one title each.

The most recent World Cup was held in Germany in 2006. The next World Cup will be held in South Africa, between 11 June and 11 July 2010, and the 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil.

2.-  Hollywood Looks Overseas for Talent and Profit
Over half of ticket sales for American movies now come from other countries. But the industry sees billions lost to piracy. Transcript of radio broadcast. Source: This is the VOA Special English Economics Report.
This year, something happened at the Academy Awards that had not happened since nineteen sixty-four. All the winners for best acting were from outside the United States.
Daniel Day-Lewis and Tilda Swinton are British. He won best actor for "There Will Be Blood"; she won best supporting actress for "Michael Clayton." French actress Marion Cotillard won the Oscar for best actress for "La Vie en Rose." And Spain's Javier Bardem won best supporting actor in "No Country for Old Men."
Hollywood is increasingly looking outside America's borders for stars and profit.
Jonathan Taplin is a professor at the USC Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California. He says that today, about fifty-four percent of the ticket sales for Hollywood studios now come from outside the United States.
For the last three months of two thousand seven, foreign sales totaled about eight hundred eighty million dollars. But there is fierce competition for each movie dollar.
Hollywood has lost market share in some places as other countries develop their own film industries. For example, in the mid-eighties, American films had eighty percent of the market in South Korea. Today that share is about forty percent.
Hollywood also faces competition from illegally copied movies, a major issue to the Motion Picture Association of America. The trade group estimated more than eighteen billion dollars in worldwide losses from piracy in two thousand five.
Hollywood reporter Alan Silverman says piracy has influenced how American movies are released. In the past, Hollywood studios waited months after the American release of a film to release it in foreign markets. Now, many aim to release films at the same time around the world.
Foreign markets may also influence how people get their movies. Different nations have different levels of technology.
Efforts to settle on the next-generation DVD got a lot of attention recently. Sony's Blu-ray technology for high-definition televisions won the competition with Toshiba's HD DVD format.
Yet DVD sales have dropped in recent years. This may be a sign that people are increasingly getting their movies off the Internet. The Internet is another front in Hollywood's war on piracy. But more than that, it presents complex business questions for an industry now built mostly on DVD and ticket sales.
And that's the VOA Special English Economics Report, written by Mario Ritter. I'm Steve Ember.

Beyonce Knowles    (Traducción)

Beyonce Giselle Knowles was born in Texas in 1981. She grew up singing and dancing and quickly developed the qualities that would make her an international superstar. Her talents were discovered by her dance teacher while she was a church choir soloist. She took Beyonce to local talent competitions, where she won no fewer than 30 of them.
Beyonce decided to form a singing group. She asked her best friend LaTavia Roberson to join her. She also invited along a cousin and a friend and together they formed a quartet called 'Destiny's Child'. Beyonce’s father saw their potential and quit his well-paid job to become the group’s manager. They shot to fame as the most successful female group of all time.
It was touch and go at the beginning whether or not her father’s financial risk would pay off. In 1997, they signed with Columbia Records and their debut single, ‘Killing Time’, was the soundtrack to the film ‘Men In Black’. They recorded hit after hit and won dozens of awards. Beyonce went solo in 2000 and her career continued to take off.
Knowles won five awards at the 2004 Grammy Awards and a BRIT Award for International Female Solo Artist. She has recorded with the biggest names in music.
